Discussion, status report if you play any of the originals (or remakes), fun memories and all kinds of gawking related. To start things off, is there anything extra you wish Gen 2 had in the original games? Hard mode: Not the stuff that was cut from Kanto. Crystal's online battle tower looked pretty sick and i wish the 3DS re-releases somehow included that also.

I’m pretty sure Lake of of Rage was intended to be a full town, that would have been cool to see
also just add more levels and rooms the the mountains and caves, Johto’s dungeons are pretty good already so may as well double down on that (maybe have some other Pokémon that appear weekly like the Lapras does). Also have gym leaders should rematch you
Mechanically, I’d have a move relearner in the actual game rather than having it only be in Stadium. Give the phone more space so you can collect more phone numbers to make rise of the spawn feature, and free items like stones.
Also since someone is going to bring it up levels, increase the levels of the wild Pokémon by 5 after Ercuteak. and by 10 after blackthorn.

Gen 2 is such a huge landmark of the series and so freaking replayable. For me personally its not only the perfect example of a sequel but also of a proper videogame. It has fun gameplay, pretty graphics, cool sfx and soundtrack, new stuff that blend well with whats already out there, TwO ReGiOnS, the best final boss twist in all of the series and more that i will eventually recall and post here.

Even with 100 new pokemon it would be hard to do so. Having Falkner owning a Skarmory or Bugsy a Scizor for the sake of thematics would be a pain to battle through but im not saying its not offputting seeing Karen not using a Tyranitar instead of Vileplume or whatnot.

You know.. this is exactly what people mean when they complain about pokemon in Gen 2. Nice team you got there, only:

Why jump to the most extreme examples immediately on the gyms? You could have Hootoot, Murkrow, Bugsy could replace a cocoon with Pineco, even in the limited Johto dex there were options.

There are some really obvious ones though, like giving Morty a Misdreavus, swap one of Jasmine's Magneton out for Skarmory or something, give Falkner a Hoothoot or a Noctowl, maybe give Chuck a Hitmontop...
I don't need them to force Johtomons onto every single team but it's weird to me that there are so many missed opportunities

That's easy. Win with it, use items on it, there is a daily haircut place in Goldenrod and if you level it up in the area you caught it, it gets boosted happiness.

I've used it a few times and it usually evolves by the team Rocket takeover, if I'm letting it happen naturally.

Thats not to mention that in GS you can buy a Dratini in Goldrenrod and get it early as fuck. If you want Pokemon that won't evolve before the post game, look at gen 5.

I went with Growlithe in my last playthrough but getting a fire stone is a pain in the ass and I had to keep it unevolved until level 50 anyway to get flamethrower, given the TM is postgame only
1/7 chance of getting a shittier version of magmar doesn't do much for me
I know it's cliche to say but I wish they'd just put houndour in Johto, or at least made vulpix catchable since it gets flamethrower at level 31

I was always replaying it with the wrong mindset, but this time I said "fuck it, I'll cheat, I'll fuck around, I'LL HAVE FUN!", and I had a lot of fun.
I catched the legendaries, the 20-something Unown (full alphabet, with a shiny V), got a shiny Cleffa thanks to the Odd Egg (named Valentine, in honor of Dorkly), and I finally got my Johto team, I love it.

What I'm trying to say is: play Crystal, you get the full thing, a lot of fun, and just inject your mons and find which could be your favorites.

The only thing I would complain is maybe the classic "blocking Houndour and the Super Rod in Postgame", and no Safari Zone. But give it a chance, is a great Pokemon Game.

Lets do a quick means of comparison; DP vs GS. I'll be counting version exclusives and before the elite 4:

Fire types: DP = 2 GS = 7

Electric types: DP = 3 GS = 5

Ice types: DP (a third of the region is in snow) = 2 GS = 6

Gen 2 has a great selection. And once again, gen 5 is here to make a supposed gen 2 problem worse.

Comparing to literally the worst pokedex in the series to make your games look better is not exactly an achievement, and needing to cut down to just 1 single route in gen 5 to pretend it doesn't open up 1 town later makes it difficult to respect any attempt at legitimacy.

Dratini will also be Lv 20 at best when you catch it. Grinding it to Level ~35-40, where the rest of your team should be, is a pain in the ass. Especially when you're basically about to go to the League. Grinding for hours kills all the mood. And it has slow exp. growth and sucks at battles. Yeah, you need to go out of you way a lot to get a Dragonite in Gen 2. Compare this with getting a Garchomp in Gen 4 or a Haxorus in Gen 5.

What are you talking about? The only problem with the Gen 5 mons is that a lot of them evolve very late. Some of them like Hydreigon and Volcarona are in practice available only in the post-game, unless you grind like crazy and overlevel. But other than that it's fine. There's a good variety for every type and all the mons (ok, maybe not the first 20) are viable unlike the shitmons of Johto.

I agree that it's fair to have consistent standards, which is why the gen 2 dex is bad. It doesn't do a good job of showing off the new mons like other games do. The only reason you don't see other dexes like the DP one discussed more is that their fans don't try to claim that having a tiny number of repetitive Kanto mons as the majority of your region's encounters is a good thing.

I'd say better rematching, infinite phone numbers and higher level rematches. Gen 3 movesets would also make some things a tiny bit less shit.
On that note, I can't help but imagine how much better the series might've ended up if Gen 2 -> 3 transferral was implemented (whether through third-party hardware for the GBA, GC or something else) and the remake cycle was delayed by another 5, 10 years. Would we have ended up with console remakes instead? Something closer to Legends than the 1:1 map transferrals? Probably not, but it's cool to imagine. Also it'd mean you could still have your bros from 1996, without fucking about with the unofficial data editing tools we have now.

Also if penalize Johto for not “showing off the new mons” that opens up a can of worm. Are other games shit for not letting you visit the previous region? Is Unova the only good region because it’s the only one that puts the focus entirely on new Pokémon?

There’s a good case to made that having GSC be a “sequel game” was a dumb idea since it made Game Freak and TPC not value Johto Pokémon and characters, but point almost never comes up.

Hey, you were the one who wanted to compare to other games in the first place. If we can call the DP dex bad because it is small and mainly Kanto mons, Johto should face the same judgement. Don't backtrack now because you realized consistency shows Johto's failures.

It caused a bunch of problems in other places and takes time away from making a coherent new region and story. In gen 2 it didn't matter what happened because they thought they were making the final games, in gen 3+ they had to look at what worked and what didn't to make sure they could recapture Kanto's success, and once repeating Kanto worked in Hoenn it became the formula going forward.

The graph isn;t inaccurate. There's nothing wrong with Johto's gym leaders or Elitre 4, the issue is that the wild mons in GSC game tend to be lower level than average for other regions.

It isn't inaccurate necessarily, but it intentionally misrepresents the data by using percentages to shrink the difference. And as you said, the real issue is everything else not matching the gyms, which the graph also conveniently hides by showing only aces of major battles.
The real issue with johto is lack of consistency, which more recent mechanics like scaling exp and the new exp share address directly by making levelling across your team and relative to npcs more balanced.

Maybe Kurt's balls actually working and being worth waiting? Also removal of that not needed 20% miss chance on every NPC status move.
Also more things like Ruins of Alph. And maybe some post-game side quest with TR that would solve problem with lack of Dark-type badge boost, tho considering how much attempt to make using dark-types inconvenient GF did in gen 2 i feel like it was intentional?

Also ignore memery about BaD LEvEl CuRVe and other bs from people that did not player Crystal.

But at the very least, I found they found a way to bring over the Mobile Adapter to the West, or at least make its content offline. The Mobile Adapter had DLC content that is practically undocumented because YouTube didn't exist at that time. It's completely lost stuff, even the Gigaleak had nothing on that matter. I wish they immortalized it somehow.
Also, I think Crystal should have broadened the availability of some event-only items and room decorations. I get that these things were secret in GS, and they were supposed to be a bonus for utilizing the game's more advanced functions, but I see no reason to keep them so in Crystal. I also wish some cut content from the beta was kept, like Honey, Soldier or Male Teacher Trainer Classes, Aquarium, the opening screen minigame etc.

Yeah, it was ahead of its time, that's why it failed. It was totally too early for that.
In fact, this all made Western Crystal a bit pointless. In Japan it was all about the mobile - that was its most marketed feature and most effort in the game's development was put into that. This is why Crystal feels lacking in novelty compared to other "third versions".
Still, it's among my favorites. It has all the good stuff from GS and more.

Like others said, give gym leaders Johto mons. Every game has 80% shitmons so that isnt an issue but still would like more variety. Tyhplosion Ampharos Lapras/Red Gyarados Snorlax is pretty old and same, but not as bad as Sinnoh. Scizor and Tyranitar are one of my favorites.

I loved getting slowpoke quite early in the game. My main disappointment was that Paras still didn't learn any plant type attack early on and there wasn't any tm available until very late in the game. In FRLG I could teach Paras bullet seed.

Replaying Silver. Wanna make a definitive save and keep it on an external disk drive or something. Good game as always. After Elite 4 I started experimenting with the Coin Case glitch and box names and the results are amazing, I have infinite Master balls, TMs and Rare candies (which I'm only using to complete the dex). I think I'm finally gonna complete the dex without gamesharks. Also traded evolutions using a local link, allowing me to get the trade evos. Finally made my perfect team, but now I'm struggling against Red lol.
