Its likely that Hissuan Voltorb showed up one day out of the blue and Apricots were the closest thing to it at the time, so they based Pokeball creation on Apricots as it was readily found on this planet for them to reproduce whatever Voltorb is and to complete Pokeballs. With Voltorb later evolving itself to try and mimic Pokeballs. A chicken/egg, which came first back and forth scenario.
Voltorb isn't found in nature, end of story. It's not metal, or at least not a discoverable Earth metal.
