In Gen 7 damn near every trial captain or Kahuna could be met outside of their designated zones just doing stuff normally, if they didn't outright have places (Mallow's Restaurant, Olivia's Rock Store, Kiawe's House in Paniola, Lana's in Konikoni) or quests (Ilima's postgame battle and Totem Gumshoos/Raticate rematch). And even if they have NONE of that the characters have plenty of backstory and shit to dig into (Nanu being a disenfranchised downer because he saw his partner be swallowed by a Guzzlord form his time on the Interpol, Sophocles' insecurities about taking over the trial at the Observatory now that Molayne is stepping down).

The only Kalos leaders with anything remotely interesting going on are Korrina and Wulfric. Fucking hell, the anime had to pull shit out of its ass even harder than usual to give the rest anything to do at all, like Grant and Viola having a relationship which was never mentioned in-game.
