I haven't watched anime in a long while but that's my issue with a lot of modern cartoons, wouldn't be surprised if it's happening in anime too.
Everything feels so cleaned up and too nice, meanwhile older cartoons had people be outright jackasses and pieces of shit to each other.

A lot of Japanese animation in general is too clean or really likes to exaggerate simple boring moments too much. I can't get into it because of it. Wish Japanese animation could have a more realistic feel to it.

I don't understand the reasoning for your types besides the color of the clothes, but I'm going to take my own wack at it.
Double-D: Psychic/Steel because he is the inventor of the group and he is really smart.
Eddy: Normal/Dark because he likes to make schemes but other than that he really doesn't have much special about him.
Ed: Ground/Poison because he likes to slam his body into everything especially the ground and he is extremely stinky and gross.

Eddy going through a character arc where he finds he's actually good at contests, starts to like it for its own sake and not the fame and fortune, starts to doubt his own motivations, maybe falls back to his old greedy self after a string of bad contests, but then rises back up again with encouragement from his friends and Pokemon, and starts winning again and maybe even makes it to the grand festival.

Someone give them some team ideas, mostly their mains and their shouldermons. I feel like Bewear would be the only Pokemon who can best equal Ed's huggable strength. Eddy would love to have the foodmons because of his obsession with jawbreakers, wouldn't be surprised if his team consisted of only fairies to be honest because of it, and Ed trying to eat them. Though Eddy would also try to use Pokemon like Meowth for payday or Smeargle for sketch. I can see Double-D having mons like Magnemite, Elgyem, Alolan Geodude, Nosepass, etc. because of his interests.
