That would not be the fault of not having a new generation. Journeys could literally do anything they want. The majority of the series is filler/slice of life/monster of the week anyway. Just get creative and tell more stories with the mons and characters we have. That’s the whole beauty of not being tied to a badge quest.

It's going to sell 20 million units minimum guaranteed and absolutely no one among the majority consumerbase will be upset if it goes back to something closer to SWSH, just like how no one was upset about Charizard's absence from PLA. Also, BDSP was very similar to DP but still wound up being one of the best selling Switch games because people are THAT obsessed with Pokemon as a brand.
The fact is the three year cycle's coming to its close, regional forms on their own can't carry this franchise's marketability for too long, and with knowledge that the Switch is going to last a good long while thanks to chip shortages preventing Nintendo from moving onto a new platform because hardly anyone will be able to get their hands on it, you bet your sweet ass GameFreak is going to milk the FUCK out of the next few years with a core game release for each and every one of them.

But it's pretty much impossible it retains "nothing" from PLA. SwSh had some similar ideas in its DLC.
