Regional forms are cool when the designs are done competently. Problem is, most of them are ugly as sin and/or involve facial hair for some reason.

Alolan Forms were originally made to subtly tease LGPE because they were all made for LGPE's sake to "fix" type distribution without adding any new species except Meltan and Melmetal, but their overwhelming popularity and successful merch sales were enough for TPC to advise GameFreak to keep them around and continue making Regional Variants.

Regionals aren't a gimmick, and I'm glad they added them since it makes sense. One creature that moves to another place and becomes isolated will evolve over time to something similar yet different

They were a regional gimmick but got upgraded sort of like character customization was supposed to be Kalos exclusive.
The real question is why are mega evolutions getting lumped in with the regional nukes and not other stuff that's been removed like held items or abilities.
