I have fun raising my monster, but it takes too long before you are able to hold a normal combat. When you monster is good enough, now you can play the game. For a bit.
The tournaments are the only way to have money (or at least a proper payout), and the fights pissed me off. Oh, the move your monster knows since birth suddenly is unavailable because he "doesn't understand"? Tough shit pal.
When your monster can finally win a few battles, now you unlock the expeditions, where you can eat more shit! If you don't return to base, you lose everything you found (that without speaking about random monster encounters that kick your ass).
And when your monster finally is strong, obedient, and useful.... Fuck you, he is old. Every monster with 5 years (and this happens quickly because your training program is one entire week in one thing) is forced to retire, so either you release him... Or pay a veteran fee so he trains your new monster.
I drop the game when that happens, and never return after a long time.
