>Both are Nintendo's largest, best-selling IPs. >Both has lots of games, spinoffs, supplementary material, and lots of merchandise. >Both are considered to be getting stale, using the same, repetitive concepts every time and generation, as well as relying on nostalgia. Is that really true? And if so, is one doing it worse than the other?

Mario has it better because the mainline portion of it has 3D Mario and people only ever say that the "New" series has gotten stale. and they'd be right, but the difference is that even if the New Super Mario Bros games are basically reskins of one another on different hardware they at least get that gap instead of being the same garbage but worse every year like it's been since 2013.

>>49745458 >Mario >literally some of the most highly rated games of all time >the last two releases having received critical and fan success How is it even in the same category as Pokémon?
>>49745471 There hasn’t even been a NSMB game since 2012

There's nothing wrong with having a formula that players like. You wanna know what happens when you try to constantly be innovative and new for the sake of it, look at the Sonic the Hedgehog series and how it constantly tried to reinvent its core gameplay and tone. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

Mario spin off are better, all pokemon spin off are mediocre shit and pokemon is only big because merchandise and pokemon go not videogames

The last main Mario games have been amazing, this isn't up to debate. They were just too short.

>>49745458 Mario gets to shake up the formula a bit in his games. Odyssey is different to Sunshine, which was different from 64. Pokemon has been stuck with 6 dudes, 4 moves for a long time.

Mario's merchandise doesn't sell because the characters aren't appealing enough.

>>49745476 >2006* No. If you're going to correct me then it's 2016. But it's hard to even sell XYORAS as on par with BW-- that said there is a strong argument to be made that Sun and Moon are the cliff while XY was just the dip.

>>49745945 >No. If you're going to correct me then it's 2016 Nope. DP were objectively a massive drop in quality.

That's a complete contrast to SM/USUM/SWSH, which were made to be shit on purpose.
