Because Sw/Sh (and by extension, BD/SP) deliberately cut Pokemon for the sake of cutting them, while PLA had a tighter focus on the region and story.
Everyone never considered PLA mainline, so what it did was fine for the most part.

I still have to see exactly what they've taken from PLA.

So far it just looks to be the engine. If they don't have the amazing battle menu, or the ability to learn and forget moves whenever you want or evolve when you want, then it's yet another step back.

It's big maybe. The environments look straight out of PLA it'd be weird to not have PLA mechanics with that kind of overworld. Also the Japanese site says "catch and battle" not "battle in order to catch"
