Starters are important Pokémon that define a big part of the experience playing the game. it's never satisfying to box your starter or feel like you're using it out of obligation. Moreover, again, there increasingly more and more Pokémon that are defined by this, especially in Gen VIII, like Toxtricity and Galarian Weezing. It also goes beyond Pokémon and affects world design. Ecruteak doesn't have Chinese tourists chasing geisha around, but SM is lousy with ironic jokes about foreign tourists in Alola. It's not all bad, but starter Pokémon that literally do football victory poses and James Bond finger guns are just too smirky and ironic for Pokémon in my opinion.
