I'd actually encourage doing it sooner rather than later. The difficulty is scaled based on your gym badge progression, I think. As opposed to Crown Tundra, which is intended to be done after completing the main game.

>>49852070 said is true though. The Cram-o-matic has horrendous odds for actually spitting out an apriball. You get a single apriball as a prize from 'ball guy' after defeating a gym in the story. Friend, Lure, Level, Heavy, Love, Moon, Dream. In that order. So it might be more efficient to just play the game and grab that if the one you want is fairly early on.
You won't really get a great chance to horde apriballs though, without injection or giveaways.
