It's a kid's game for christ sake. You can customize the character anyway, why do you care what the default model looks like? I personally don't care for the art style change to be more western now, but I feel this is the new era for Pokemon and it will no longer be Japan-centric. I think I am coming to accept that Pokemon is becoming more and more of an international company and nothing can stay the same forever anyway.
