I still subscribe to the theory that the zodiac serves as a basis for the fire starter design. Spergs have the idea that it should be 1:1 but don’t understand the idea of taking artistic liberties. Fennekin falls in the canidae family (literally meaning dog), Cyndaquil is called the little mouse Pokémon.
We don’t know where Fuecoco’s line is headed - but it may very well be a Mexican serpent like many have mentioned. Personally, I think it’s interesting how the Japanese word for crocodile, wani, also is the name of a serpent-like yokai.
