If this were a simpler game with basic geometry then they could just have the UV map be a basic tile, but instead they can't figure out how to unwrap surfaces and map them with additional details. The other issue aside from the blurry low resolution textures is the how they can't seem to settle for a singular artstyle. Sun and Moon already had a great base to build off of, but for some reason they're going more with a realistic artstyle that drops cel shading in favor of clean simple geometries with little to no texturing, probably with the intention of moving towards an industry standard seen in animated movies like Pixar, Dreamworks or Illumination. This would be great if say lighting, shadows, soft gradients and bright bold colors actually had an impact, but it seems GF is still figuring it out.
