I think they look fine in the art, but in-game have that uncanny generic-anime look.
The real issue is that these new designs just don't mesh with the rest of the franchise, it's gonna be fucking weird having these models alongside characters from past games.

They were older than Emma who was 16, that implies they are at least 17, which is pretty damn close to being an adult. Vastly older than the rest of the protags, the closest being Gen 5's at 14. The games didn't suffer because they happened to be older, it suffered for different reasons.

I think the problem with it being sugimori or not is really dependent on the eyes though and they just don’t look like modern sugimori eyes which ended up translating even weirder to 3d, making them look even LESS consistent with pokemon style
It’s strange. I’m not sure they were designed by him in fact I would bet money that they aren’t. I can’t get over the eyes. Maybe just a new chapter of art style for sugi.

It's not like it matters anon, you'd never notice it. They could easily just design a character that looks like Hilda or Lucas or whoever, say they're 18-20, and call it day. It's irrelevant towards the design of anime characters. That's the issue. They're trying too hard to go in the other direction in an effort to make them as unappealing to the masses as possible to try and stop hentai and various other things, which will never happen. Might as well just say they're adults, design them as normal, and move about their day.

Also you and I both know if we got a chance to play as Lance or Brock or Lt. Surge or Giovanni, it would be sick as fuck.

That wasn't the problem, the problem is that GameFreak is in this weird quasi state of cel-shading/realism, rather than just going full on cel-shading like ArcSys or Atlus.
