Mustelids and feliformes aren’t related, so you were just lied to. But Sneasel’s name in Japanese is Nyula, so I guess it’s supposed to be both like how Arcanine is a dog and tiger.

The Japanese consider Sneasel and Weavile honorary cats in promotional items and fanart.
I imagine this has to do with the onomatopoeia “nya” being in their names Nyula and Manyula.
