Subverting expectations doesn't automatically make something good but it is a good principle to follow. The most unpopular starter of the last 3 generations is Rillaboom because it's literally just a cartoon gorilla, incredibly run of the mill and boring.

it wouldn’t matter as much if an American made it but set the story in Spain but it mostly takes place in California, that with being an American made tv hero it’s more of American mythos than Spanish

The ones that wear the black outfits and do all the magic things came from Americans that went to their theaters and thought the guys moving the props were ninjas. The Japanese just played along with it, so you have the actual shinobi and the ninjas you see in games and movies. Zorro takes place in Alta California when it was a Spanish territory. He's basically the pop-culture ninja of Spanish swordfighters and what people default to when thinking of them. Starters never really needed to represent accurate regional folklore anyway, they lean towards that pop aspect over mythology.

No, the stage hands were never perceived as ninja. Only on rare exceptions were ninja dressed like a stage hand, but the association did not catch on until the Americans mixed them up.
