In fact it's theorized that the portuguese already knew something was there, given that we both rejected sponsoring Columbus' campaign, and a few years later in the Tordesillas Treaty we moved the separating line a couple hundred miles west from the original world-splitting one, so we "coincidentially" kept what is now Brazil on our side of the world, years before we set foot in it
