Agreed, gen 6 artstyle was kino and I hate how they've been pushing for more realistic art style in recent years which imo doesn't mesh well with the creature models

I'm already feeling nostalgic for this style, strangely enough. It's basically classic Pokemon with more detailed, 3D surroundings.

I think Alola also looks fine for 3D Pokemon, since all the islands are distinct. Open world Pokemon, at least in Legends, felt kinda generic.

Gen 6 graphics were a product of their time. Let's Go is a mix between high resolution graphics and chibi artstyle. It's just too goddamn slow compared to XYORAS movement. Let's Go's overworld artstyle should be used in a competent remake of XY.

I rather Gamefreak keep trying 3d realistic size games than get stuck with oras/xy chibi style for years, don't get me wrong I like those 6th gen graphics (not the games) but it's time to move on and hopefully they learn how to design better open worlds game by game

You don’t understand, people out there want want them to capitalize on the smallest details (facial movements, voice acting, a certain way a tree fucking moves) it’s insane how detailed these people want games anymore it’s unbelievable

XY's art style is great, there's quite a bit of detail but it's still cartoonish and distinctly pokemon. The 3ds resolution causing zoomed out shots to get pixilated is the only issue with it. I wish gen 7+ looked like an up-scaled XY with the cutscene models used for the overworld instead of the semi-chibi ones. ORAS and Gen 7 didn't look bad, it just felt like they had less detail in the textures and used ONLY bold colors for the environments instead of a wide mix.

It makes me sad that the space for experimenting with these kinds of things just isn't there at places like Game Freak. I could see a game in this style, but still fully open roaming working beautifully. Like Pokemon Wilds but with 3D models instead of Crystal-era sprites (not to knock that, since those look good too).

I’m playing Shield for the first time and just entered the Wild Area, I’m really really whelmed by it because there’s so many frame drops, the weather was hail and i could barely see shit, the grass had nothing but fucking Vanillites and Bunnelbys, when I tried to explore beyond the initial part of the Wild Area I got hit with messages that I’m not allowed to catch any of the arbitrarily defined “strong-looking” pokemon, and I was told I can’t even enter the city at the top without a certain gym badge….
Is it just because I played PLA first or is the Wild Area as boring as my first impression of it was

IIRC the only pokemon you can't catch initially are the special spawns like that early Onix. Everything in the grass should be in your level range and those change with the weather.
