>>49844433I don't think they should come back, honestly
they were poorly implemented and caused playthrough teams to all lean a certain way due to people wanting to use the gimmick over their favorites.
Mon who really didn't need them got them over those who did (Charizard, Mewtwo, Lucario, Rayquaza, Garchomp, Salamence, Diancie, arguably Lopunny), most of the designs were just "the base form but more" (main standout is Mega Mawile, holy shit I wish that was just a regular evo) which is fine but kind of makes the forms seem pointless in terms of aesthetic changes, and I think it took the spotlight away from standard cross-gen evos in favor of the temporary transformations instead
which is great for mon like Aggron or Alakazam who really needed a buff but couldn't evolve again... but those two are heavily outweighed by the bunch of shitters who COULD evolve again and were instead robbed of permanent improvements in favor of a feature that was ditched after 2 fucking games (Altaria, Sableye, Banette, and may I remind you- FUCKING MAWILE)
they're a decent concept on a base level. give less powerful pokemon a temporary boost to aide those most affected by power creep and design shift, updating their looks for a modern era without tainting the base form's appeal. but the execution was incredibly poor, skewed by fan-favoritism and merchandising, and honestly made things worse than they were before without megas. it's not like I expected anything better, even back in 2014 with ORAS- this is Pokemon, after all
but it does suck, and I really wish they're slowly forgotten about or just relegated to inconsequential side games where they can be fiddled with and played around with in a way less rigid gameplay style
