They sort of tried to do a little bit of it in Sun and Moon since some older characters show up again around the battle tree, but it's not the same. They absolutely need to bring it back completely with a refresh. There is now going to be four more generations worth of gym leaders and champions to add. And if they really want to go whole hog, they should just go ahead and add the elite four plus story significant characters from the various games (Villains, major NPCs like Zinnia, rivals...) Maybe even go as far as to include the frontier brains, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. Basically just make it like Masters but actually in a Pokemon game.
