Opening domestic (U.S.) weekend it debuted at #2 (with $54 million) behind the Avengers Endgame ($62 million - which was in its third weekend):
https://www.the-numbers.com/box-office-chart/weekend/2019/05/10In 2020, Sonic debuted with $58 million, setting a record for a video-game adaption. It also out-grossed Pikachu domestically, even with the pandemic cutting off its stay in theaters ($148 million for Sonic, $144 million for Pikachu.) Pikachu had a budget of $150 million, and with the marketing, it probably factored to $300+ million, so it probably didn't turn as much a profit as they may have hoped.
Globally, Warcraft remains the highest grossing video-game adaption ($439 million, while Pikachu is at #2 with $433 million.) Though, worth mentioning that Warcraft bombed in the U.S. and made less overall ($43 million) than either Sonic or Pikachu did in just their respective opening weekend. Warcraft was a huge hit in China where it made like $200+ million.
