Looking at these artworks hurts so much, Pokemon used to be the best thing ever and now we have humans in a suit as starters and everyone is okay with that. Gen 9 starters will probably follow the same route as the ones from gen 8 and 7, they are already not that appealing and will probably be much worse when evolved.

Charizard and Blastoise weren't connected to Charmander and Squirtle.

We don't know the original final evo of Charmander but it was scrapped for Charizard (which was named Dragon 4), and Totartle was scrapped for Blastoise. Blastoise also had a different prevo that was scrapped.

Bulbasaur line got easier developed that is started with Ivysaur then remodeled into Green Version Venusaur and Nishida made Bulbasaur and Ivysaur from there.

But basically yeah, Gen1 development was a huge mess

To throw out a point here, Charizard clearly wasn't initially designed to be "cool".
Sugimori just modified the design to that extent. The kaijumon stuff was being actively erased during gen 1. It was very much his artstyle clashing with what they wanted at the time.

No Charizard was very much designed with the rest of his line; Dragon 4 while an actual mon, it was a very early Scyther(which they eventually just swapped the theming around which gave us the final).

We know Zard was incredibly late and made alongside the squirtle line(including the intended wartortle evo), as his sprite is put exactly there.
And in general it makes sense as he was a Atsuko design(same with squirtle).

His horn splits into two. I never understood the brief red color and always figured it was some leftover piece of design fuckery.

Obviously the proto R/G sprites are in the really tiny size of the final.(Though there was a small period of time where they tried 64x64, that never went anywhere for obvious reasons)
I don't really know of any sprites besides the helix chamber ones which i don't have clean versions of.

I have no idea what the red is either as thats not a feature of the original sprite obviously(though the original sprite makes it seem likely that it and zard were meant to have normal looking horns).
I guess Suigmori was just really against how much Charmeleon looked like a wingless zard with a different horn(s).

I can come up with in-game lore reasons, like the adolescent form takes on a stronger color while it's maturing or the blood vessels are growing overtime in preparation for 2 new limbs. Curious what the actual reason was.

No its very blatantly not that. Charizard in his original sprite is ultra similar to chameleons original sprite.
Its a bizarre design choice made after the fact, Sugimoris stuff is done once everything is done pretty much.
