Are contests a gimmick? Are game corners a gimmick? Are shinies a gimmick? Is Berry farming a gimmick? Are battle facilities a gimmick? Are six Pokemon battles a gimmick? Are Pokemon swarms a gimmick? Are following Pokemon a gimmick? Where do you draw the line? None of that shit is part of the core gameplay experience.
