The versus books guides may have had some janky ass opinions, but as a kid I really enjoyed getting a bit of guidance on which mons to grab for your playthrough. No other guide I know of did that at all.

This thread reminded me of the dream I had last night. Growlithe was gonna get a new evolution. For some reason it was a surprise reveal in the anime and it evolved when surrounded by 5 items... I'm trying to recall them. Three of them were the same. I can't remember but they were like real world items. Anyway he evolved into a slightly bigger biped version of himself whose theme was looking "cool". Like he had a new haircut and was yellow I think. I think this dream was influenced by Hisuian Growlithe. Anyway he was pretty disappointing looking and I was hoping he'd get a third evolution.

When you're a retarded kid, the "just use anything, the games are piss easy" thing doesn't apply as much. Having a team of non-shitmons helps more when you don't know the mechanics inside and out and could be difference between getting stuck or winning and moving on.

I have no idea why we are shitposting versus books when they have literally been THE most comprehensive guides in history for the games they covered. I don’t remember a guide that actually put small profiles for any new pokemon you encountered in the route/city pages or even had optional segments in between the natural progression recommending to do certain sidequests.
Their opinions on the pokemon were mostly based for in game and some were accurate to gen 2

The default Gen 2 moveset was only possible by transferring a gligar from stadium to the main games. It could only get wing attack as an egg move, and it got that, earthquake and counter through stadium. And getting the stadium gligar isn’t easy. Our bat scorpion got done raw

It's Growl + Lith as in "lithic" referring to old eras, similar to "arcane" in Arcanine. I don't know why they added an "e" to make it "lithe", lithe isn't pronounced any way similarly to lith, and lithe is not anywhere near the first word I would use to describe Growlithe.

Also "lith" means stone in greek, so Hisuian Growlithe's is potentially inspired by that, or perhaps just a happy coincidence.

This isn't wrong in the context of Gold/Silver, given that you can't obtain Charmander unless you have a Gen 1 game, another Gameboy, and a link cable and Typholosion is basically interchangeable with Charizard aside from trading a flying type for ThunderPunch.
