Houndour and Elektrike seem like they'd make reasonable starters, almost as "hardier" counterparts to the usual elemental starters.

y'know, idk if this is a hot take, but i like morgrem better than grimmsnarl. i like its trick of bowing in false surrender only to stab with its hair, and honestly gives off a sly trickster vibe way more then grimmsnarl (and tricky bastards are some of my favorite designs for characters in general)

For an unusual mix I could see Smoochum, Magby, and Elekid.
Dratini, Gible, or Deino for Dragon types.
Yamask or Gastly would be hilarious.

But given their current stuff I can see Playable Sneasel being a thing.
