They weren't impeccable, and definitely had their flaws, especially a couple of the choices for what got one, but honestly? They were better than Z-Moves and Dynamax, at the very least.

Thought it was cool that my favorite (Metagross) had a big power boost

Looking from a woder perspective the gimmick is objectively terribly designed. Absolutely no thought to balancing nostalgia shilling against the pokemon that actually needed help, and the things that DID get needed help were made irrelevant by the strong megas.
