Sun and Moon didn't outright make me quit, but I found it so uninteresting that I barely played it and subconsciously stepped back from the series for a few years. Then I thought Let's Go was dumb kiddy trash so I didn't touch it.

I half-followed the SwSh release build-up and saw everyone shitting on it but purchased it anyway. Played it in 2020 and actually loved it, maybe because everyone insisted it was "le worst pokemon game ever" I went into it with weird expectations, but I loved it. Now I'm following the series again and feeling pretty hyped for SV. So, unlike most of /vp/, I credit SwSh with getting me back into Pokemon.

Bought Moon Version shortly after release, the actual physical cartridge. Can't remember the exact point, it wasn't much later than the Alolan Marowak trial, but I couldn't stand all the pointless cutscenes or how they pushed Lillie down your throat all the time.

BW, even though nowadays I'd agree that BW was the strongest first set of games in the series' history. It might've just been that I was moving to a different phase of my life at the time and I just dropped Pokemon as a result moreso than the games themselves, but I do recall feeling pretty underwhelmed by BW in my first playthrough. The story was an improvement over previous games and the overall polish was there, but it was the first time the series didn't make any significant additions to the core gameplay mechanics (Triple and Rotation Battles were more gimmicks than anything).

A lot of what I like about BW now were more things I ended up appreciating in retrospect and stuff I appreciated more as I replayed the games rather than things I noticed in a first playthrough. I think that might be the case for a lot of people.

Because they were the first "half-new" gen of Pokemon, being released on the same system as the previous gen, meaning only limited improvements could be made. They were more a polishing of the Diamond/Pearl format than something new entirely.

I can remember when BW were announced and thinking "why the hell are they making another gen on the DS?" especially when the 3DS was revealed just a couple months later.

Was excited for Sun, got it, and midway through the second island i had to put the game down because i couldn't believe how many things they got wrong. Ended up forcing myself to get through it. Didn't learn my lesson and pirated Ultra, had to force my way through, still felt ripped off and that was the last mainline game i played when it was new.
It's like they were trying to focus on a plot but didn't know how to write a plot so they thought more interruptions=better writing. I don't even know how you write something with this much text that ends up saying absolutely nothing of worth all game long.

Then you have the ceaseless roadblocks that have no need to exist, the lack of dungeons, the half assed totem fights (why did wishiwashi only know Water Gun and a move that makes you resist Water Gun?) and the region design itself and almost nothing went right in the game.

Funny how my first impression of the game was pretty much the same. Gameplay was mostly the same (though being faster and the pokémon moving around made it a bit more lively), I didn't like the premise of Unovan pokémon being actual replacements for the Kanto ones, but eventually I warmed up to it and it became my second favorite game in the series after Crystal. Later I got White 2 (since I started with Black) and I really enjoyed it from start to finish.
