The sparkles look like the SV gimmick icon. How could fruit play a role?

It's kinda like Devil Fruit powers. You give the fruit to one Pokemon as a held item, and when it's low on HP it will eat it, heal, change form and gain a fifth signature move, but it will also lose the ability to switch out.

Nope, overworld items effect is different, you can see it in the trailer in the same area.
To respond to OP, the gimmick will be about types (big hints are the central plaza of the main city and in the names of the games themselves)
