For me, gen 2 has more of an open environment than gen 4. The roadblocks and subplots to me add nothing to the game but the feeling that you're special for... some reason?
Gen 2 feels like an adventure to a new region, with its own identity and color palette. Also it feels a little slow, maybe because the maps are too big? MC being too slow? I can't really tell, but it's probably something related to the engine. Gen 2 feels quicker and that creates an unique flow. Also the music is way better, there's no comparison. Azalea Town, Mahogany have that special music box kinda of feeling, and it's pure peace for the soul. Goldenrod and Saffron City too.
After replaying Silver I can firmly state that it stays as my favorite, even on top of Crystal. Yes I know, Crystal has the battle tower, free babymon and some other improvements, but I care little about the battle tower when Stadium 2 exists, the sprites are more unique and I like the exclusives Ledian, Girafarig, Skarmory and Donphan.
I like that you have to find the three legendary dogs instead of just two.
