Gen 9 will end at #999, including Mythicals and mid-gen additions.
Then Gen 10 will have PokéGod-X as #1000 before the starter trio, just like Victini.

With the new evolutions added in PLA the current number of pokemon is 905.
Gen 9 would obviously have to add 95 for that number to reach 1000. Which isn't really that much of a long shot.
This is how many new mons were added each gen NOT counting regional variants:
88 - gen 8
87 - gen 7
71 - gen 6
155 - gen 5 (I was fucking SHOCKED by this)
106 - gen 4
134 - gen 3
99 - gen 2
151 - gen 1
So as you can see it's really not outside of the realm of possibility that gen 9 will bring the number to 1k especially if they don't add regional variants and focus on new mons.

They will say that the reason there are 1000 pokemon is that there are 1000 arms of arceus which is the source of all their power or something. This will be also used as the opportunity to canonically prune their roster of ‘worthless mons” as they hone in on promoting the monsters that are able to fill a marketable niche whether that be Salazzle’s barely concealed porn, Bidoof’s endearment to hicks or ludicolo for dances, while memory holding away ones that don’t make a splash or are redundant, such as many of the route 1 rats and birds.

Regional forms do not add to the number of known Pokémon but Pokémon such as Amorus, Overqwil and Ursaluna count as new additions

But that wasn't the other anon's point. Japan doesn't care about the 666 bullshit so there was no reason for the #666 pokémon to be anything relevant.

However, they DO care about the number 1000 and will probably save it for either a legendary/mythical or a starter.

Alright, 94 new entries it is with regional forms padding the list.

1000 will be a mythical of the next gen, pre-empting the starters like when Victini was labelled 000 of the Unova Dex.

Scarlet/Violet dex will end at 999.
#1000 with be added in a later update with a movie and merchandise tie-in for the big mystery of who #1000 is.
GameFreak will however screw up and accidentally leave traces of it in the base game code or add it in update and the Pokemon will be datamined early.

They use them to not increase the total amount but they haven't explicitly said so, only /vp/ did.
