An old observation, but an interesting one regardless.

Game Freak wanted to guilt trip us into not wanting Mega Pokémon back in later gens.

I forget the exact text, but the games say you need a strong bond to use it successfully, and the an entire episode in the show had Korrina's Lucario lose control specifically beause their bond wasn't ready for mega evolution yet. The concept was definitely there before gen 7.

Huh. I've never really watched any of the anime, so that would explain why I'd never heard of it. Still, you think that would be a larger plot point if they were just going to ditch the whole thing come next gen.

I don't really love megas, but up until then, Pokemon just did not introduce new forms or pokemon that you wouldn't be able to get down the line. People just naturally assumed they'd be around and then had the tablecloth yanked from underneath them.

I don't watch the anime but I saw a brief clip of some tornament where the announcer said something about challengers having to choose between using a Z-Move, a Mega Evolution or a Dynamax form in battle and could only use one of them. It would still be a clusterfuck but I could imagine battles still working with that kind of restriction.

I'm part of thinking "megas were a better mechanic than Dynamax for sure, but Gigantamax Pokemon have better designs than Megas"

For SV I hope the mechanic works on any Pokemon like Dynamax, with some having special designs when using it, but is more balanced like Megas/Z-Moves
as in, you need to hold an item to use it, at the very least.
