pokemon ranger is canon because you can transfer pokemon to the mains series, but they are based on places close to the real-life inspiration of Kanto. in the games, they say Sinnoh is the closest region, which isn't the case in the real world
there is a cave in Unova that leads to Sinnoh
Hoenn is flipped and can go to South America somehow, so it isn't near japan in the pokeworld
I'm not saying locations aren't based on real-world places, but to say that they take the same positions would simply be false
