This movie is a soulless cash-grab. These cunts knew that they could cheap out on animation, just so long as it's called "Pokemon, the movie" it would rake in billions. Pikachu's Vacation, the little short before the movie, had better animation. For example, Charizard actually looked scared and sad when his head was stuck in the hole vs. when Ash died.

They could have (and should have) pulled a Digimon and condensed some anime specials into a film. A lot of the anime (filler / character of the day) episodes are more memorable than the bulk of the first movie.

Nah, Pokemon Heroes (movie 5) was the peak of the ashnime.
The only Pokemon media that doesn't feel like a blatant toy commercial, a timeless masterpiece unironically

The first movie at its original, Japanese uncensored version would be the perfect Pokemon movie if it wasn't for the cringe, forced Satoshi's "death" scene. Still a great movie and one of the best Pokemon movies, with dark, mature tone you don't meet in later Pokemon movies and generally to the tv series.
