I always assumed it was because Ash for the most part didn't earn his badges through battle and Charizard lost respect for him until he was almost killed by a Poliwrath.

To be fair, if a Pokemon willingly takes a nap in the middle of a battle and it wasn't either told to use Rest or was hit by Hypnosis or Yawn, it's practically screaming "I do not wish to participate in this fight" so while it isn't unable to battle, it is unwilling and should be disqualified.

Pokemon battles are treated more like friendly sparring. Your competition should have a fighting spirit and everybody going in with a good will. That’s why the episodes of beating down on Paras or Casey’s Chikorita highlighted fair competition, and why bits of lore state that the gym leaders scale their teams and levels to match with their challenger. Its not just about mashing your enemies to a pulp. If Charizard is unwilling to battle and uncontrollable, the battle is ended. “Its asleep!” is kind of a bullshit call but the match should have been called somehow anyway.
