OW encounters are still pretty much random. Your ability to avoid them is heightened but they do, in fact, spawn randomly according to a species table related to the area, and they will, in fact, chase you. And if they catch you, you have to fight. Same stuff with extra steps.

WIth OW encounters a Pidgey, 2 Rattata, a Spearow, and an Oddish will all spawn at the same time and I can choose only to engage the Oddish because I want to catch one.

With random encounters I need to go through 20-30 seconds of animations and running in circles*4 to see the Pidgey, 2 Rattata, and Spearow before I can even see the Oddish.

Random encounters are fucking shit especially in a series that's focused around having to collect the things you're encountering.

In fairness, routes did not have that much variety until fairly recently, and certain encounters were isolated to certain areas on the map just like OWs still are for the most part.

I feel the same. I recently got Sword after playing Shining Pearl until the fifth gym and I don't feel like finishing SP because of all the fucking bidoofs and staravias everywhere. I'm having way more fun with Sword because I can avoid anything I already caught or that looks lame
