Beating trainers gets you more visibility and you over time get a feel for the best way to find exits, and beating trainers also gives you a directional indication sometimes, but fighting every trainer just drains items and gets you bodied. The way I got my gold symbol was learn what types of pokemon are the most dangerous (like arena trap shadow tag) and what pyramids they appear / what type each pyramid is. You have to clear 10 pyrmaids to get gold, the leader isn't hard but still look up his team and make sure you can handle him. other than that its just bring good pokemon to counter each type, like metagross on the poison pyramid, and bring linoone your first couple pyramids to use pickup and get extra items. consesrve items best you can. either look up pyramid types of trial and error it, but know the pyramid types and choose good pokemon to counter it. avoid battles when possible.
