Your identity in your brain is more or less overwritten While technically your body and brain still exists and is alive, and maybe even your memories are still in there, your actual personality and consciousness are gone either with nothing in their place resulting in you being turned turned into a vegetable/puppet or replaced with a different one resulting in a completely different person that may or may not have access to your memories depending if those remained.
It's technically no different than dying as a person, even if the body itself didn't die.
If you have ever seen a movie or game where someone was turned into someone/something else and they are just that creature now with no consciousness of the original person left, that's an Ego Death.
