It just looked like a funny, gaunt fish with a startled expression. I had no problems with it and thought some trainers in the game must have just been assholes about it being a dull color with awkward fins. I fed it a bunch of beauty Pokeblocks so it could win some ribbons just to prove a point and then it evolved, which either ironically negated what I was trying to prove or was the culmination of all those trips to the berry spinner depending on how you look at the situation. I was the only person I knew irl with a Milotic for some time.
