Alright, as someone who played Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun AND Ultra Moon, I'll give a quick drop on how I feel about these games. As a preface, Sun is my second favorite game in the series, behind Emerald. But I am biased because I thoroughly enjoy the setting of Alola.
The story is great in sun and moon. It was obviously an attempt to have a much more personal story, considering how intertwined Lillie, Guzma and Lusamine were and how often their actions could be seen throughout the story. I'm personally a huge fan of the concept of ultra space (although I get how some people would think it's retarded) and I think Sun and Moon did a great job at making the story interesting while not saying too much so as to not suffocate the player in detail. Ultra Sun and Moon suffer here, as I think they do go too far into detail and cause more harm than good on the original story.
As for the world, I personally think it's excellent. The areas are well designed and pleasant to explore, and the routes have a good balance of being open and explorable while still being linear. There's a lot more variety in climate compared to other games, and a lot more variety in area structure when compared to previous games (like the Poni wilds). Trials were a fun way to flip the traditional gym structure while not alienating the core audience too much. It's clear that there was a goal of making battling not the only thing to do in the world, and I can appreciate that deviation.
And, yes, there are a LOT of cutscenes, especially early on. I can forgive a handful because a more intertwined story needs more character interaction, but the amount in the games can make the early parts needlessly drag on. But I don't think these ruin the overall game. While its definitely on the hand-holdy side of the spectrum, the series has definitely had worse moments.
I'm not sure what these people talking about XY being great and B2/SM sucking are on about. Maybe they're huffing paint? lol
