What. What's even the point if it wears out then? Why not just use a Plate at that point, since it doesn't break after 1 use and affects ANY moves of the type instead of just attacks?

It was a 50% boost compared to a 20% boost from other items. Nobody uses plates/type boosting moves though because 20% is not enough to sacrifice an item slot

Ah yeah, I was looking at the post-Gen V version which was just 30%. I can see why the buff was a solid tradeoff in the Gen, but a 1-time 30% boost VS battle-long 20% boost doesn't seem like the greatest deal

They were mostly used with acrobatics, you would use them like a mini z-move to nuke the opponent wall and then spam acrobatics

They were already fumbling with what they wanted to do with gems in Gen 6, but it could have been interesting since they added a fairy gem. Z-Moves were a piss poor replacement and don't even justify trying to do so since they'll never be brought back outside of Alola games.

Gems were better because they could get knocked off and didn't provide nearly as much of a power boost due to stronger moves potentially having imperfect accuracy.
