In the meantime, this really was a great region. Every town is well designed visually, most are decently sized, the routes are mostly great, and the non-route landmarks are some of the best the series has ever had. From the meadows to the cemetery, desert, trial zones, beaches, and caves, exploration is apmspt always rewarded with a great view, a bunch of pokemon, and some items. Even the towns are full of sidequests and other activities.
Alola's only failure as far as world design goes was not quite having enough encouragement to explore early so that they would continue to later instead of constantly following the story, but it can't really be blamed for players giving up before they even leave Melemele.
