Whats a good fire red hack that ups the difficulty and gives a bit more variety in what you encounter? Ive only played red and gold back in the day so I don't really care about anything after gen 2.

Yeah, sometime later today apparently, to fix up various bugs (some pokemon getting moves they shouldn't, a couple of scripting issues, and the like). There was just a tweet a couple of minutes ago saying that starters were unintentionally locked to a single gender, and were also shinylocked, which is on the slate to be fixed.

Drayano's hacks really don't hold up compared to newer stuff. This seems incredibly lazy compared to things like Radical Red, Clover and Unbound. Better AI should be the bare minimum in 2022, kind of a shame.

who the fuck actually enjoys games where all gym leaders have 6 pokemon? In Black 2 you wont even get enough encounters for a full team before cheren. Is it for tasteless tards who just catch every mon they come across?

I'm at gym 3 and I only just got a sixth member. Do people actually just fill their teams with route 1+2 shitmons?

IMO best way to ramp up gym leader teams is 2 mons->2-3 mons->3 mons->4->5 ->6 ->6 -> 6

6 in the first gym sometimes feels questionable, but I think it's alright for subsequent gyms. I generally catch a lot of pokémon and swap in new stuff over time, though.
the issue is that not filling out your team when you have the capability to do so is a self-imposed restriction. if the game is balanced around the player having such a restriction, it makes things a lot easier for the players who don't, which is somewhat problematic for a difficulty hack.
