I remember SM being bizarrely overhyped on internet circles. "It all comes together!". Ultra Beasts looking like humans. No more Gyms, which sent Ash fans into an absolute frenzy. Regional Variants. No HMs. Seeing Red and Blue as adults. There was much discussion about SM.

But then, once the game came out and people struggled to get past the tutorials. Replay value was poor. Empty lots all across the region, suggesting either lost content or a sequel game down the line. The unfinished "Jurassic Park". Online was worse than Gen 6. Post-game is just another Battle Tower, with a handful of cameos. It's not a terrible game, but it did not live up to the anniversary game hype. Then USUM came out with way more content, which soured the perception of Gen 7 as a whole.

Not the guy, but Platinum was actual improvement in everything and fixed most if not all the issues of Diamond and Pearl that render both of those games obsolete aside maybe mon exclusives. Dividing a third version into two versions both with new, version exclusive Ultra Beasts (Stakataka and Blacephalon), is greedy. BW2 could at least justify being two versions since it's a sequel rather than a third version proper. USUM being two separate games isn't justifiable. It should've been one version.

I use the map as a example and the only one could find of someone pointing out the insane amount of gameplay hindering cutscenes/dialog. I feel like they could have done the two sides of the same coin thing better if they went with Guzma's assertion that they both failed, yet Kukui sort of got past it and made his own way in life with Guzma left to rot in his petty failures. Instead Kukui goes "HA HA FUCK OFF LOSER I DIDN'T FAIL I QUIT" which just pisses off Guzma more and makes him more resolute in his villainy.

It kind of makes him come off as a bit of an asshole who makes no attempt to reason with or empathise with someone who is clearly mentally unstable, especially someone who was heavily implied to be physically abused (to be fair Kukui almost certainly didn't know this), although such concepts are probably too hard for the gook mind to understand hence why they went with the whole "I'm better than you deal with it faggot have you tried not being depressed" collectivist bugman angle that fails to have any insight as to why some people end up the way they do and how much of it is society's fault, hence why their suicide rates are so high.

I dunno, I'm probably projecting but it just didn't sit well with me.

I think Kukui's line is meant to be more "I failed but found a new goal", not "I gave up before I lost". I forget the full context but IIRC he did finish the island challenge, just didn't complete the process to become a Trial Captain. After that is when he decided to learn more about battling, travelled to Kanto to fight the league, and came back to continue learning as a Professor.
The intention was that Kukui found success outside of the regional traditions by learning about others, while Guzma stayed stuck in his failure and became obsessed with the island challenge. Both want change, but only Kukui has thought of what happens after the change.
