This. The massive Dexcut of that time basically restringed you from 6 of the 9 islands, unless you had RSE, Colosseum, and XD.
And the 3 islands aren't something to write home about. One with Moltres and Rock Smash, another with an exclusive TM (cool, but nothing that impressive), and the 3rd, that is just a small berry forest (filled with rapists and bugs).

in terms purely of the mainline story plot

but as a game, speaking as a non-boomer, I got into competitive RBY late last year and I have to say it's one of the best metas I have ever played, and I rate it above almost all other generations', including GSC's

the mechanics give it a very unique feel and combined with the size of the dex makes very a super balanced meta with an interesting diversity of possible playstyles

Battle Sim RBY is worth playing; the games are no though, I agree
