Smogon has outlived it's usefulness, it used to be a good site to learn Pokemon and had good house rules for playing against other people but now that competitive play is easily accessible and Smogon is becoming increasingly divorced from the actual game it's creating a schism in the community.

Although whether that's a good thing given the bloated and archaic battle system from the fucking Game Boy era is debatable.

Singles was and always will be the quintessential Pokemon battle format. If the game becomes too busted to have a fair singles battle without a ton of restrictions, that's on GF for not understanding their own game well enough to balance it. Say what you will about Smogon, at least they try find some sanity in this shitshow.

6v6 singles has not been the main battle format for pvp since Pokemon Stadium, before double battles even existed. I can understand insisting 6v6 was correct up until Gen 4 but at this point it's ridiculous.

They make rulesets that people agree to play by. For example, they offer a monotype format (with ladder), and people who play that format and consistently rank at the top of the ladder are allowed to vote on if they think certain strategies in that format are unfun/uncompetitive.

There are very few Smogon-wide bans, most bans are from particular formats because the people who play that format enough to get good at it don't want to deal with whatever is getting banned.

I tried to tell them once that banning Kings Rock and Razor Fang would cause a butterfly effect on the meta that would end up killing it. But they instead deleted my post and shadowbanned me to keep things silent. Since then I went back to VGC online play.

I stopped playing smogon singles when I realized how often they ban mons when enough bad players complain about it.
Most of the mons that fall victim to this are just good against mindless play.

I see the same trends in Smogon that I see in competitive Smash Bros. The nerds playing the game are becoming increasingly divorced from the game that everyone else is playing (in Smash's case, casuals and scene oldtimers, in Pokemon's case, there's thankfully another more official comp format in VGC) with every new arbitrary rule change and addition. Around 10 years ago, the active Smash series games were Brawl and Melee, and the former had to make concessions in its ruleset for a metagame dominated by Meta Knight and all the things he could do to invalidate other characters and stages, but the players were still of a mind that everything that they could conceivably preserve within their ruleset without introducing overtly centralising or random elements, they would. On the side of Melee, the stagelist was already pruned heavily from days past, but Melee itself was in a rut of a smaller group of old players deciding how they wanted the game to be played; the game would see a resurgence later. Now, ten years later most Brawl players have moved two games over to Ultimate, and tournament rulesets are in a stranglehold despite an universal perception that character balance is at an all-time high despite a gargantuan roster and many 'degenerate strats' have been heavily discouraged on a mechanical level by the developers themselves. But stages are only limited to a select few, first of all because that's what players got used to during Smash 4, and second, because people are afraid of change to what they now perceive (completely arbitrarily) as the definitive way to play.

News flash, most Smash casuals don't actually play items on in gimmicky stages more than once in a while. Almost everyone prefers 1v1 stocks items off on a simple stage like Battlefield.
That was the whole reason the Small Battlefield was created mid-DLC for Ultimate, it was to cater to the above conditions because it turned out even casuals preferred a semi-competitive ruleset whether they know it or not.

Moody was unbanned for a time in gen 8 specifically because of that change. Then people started running Glalie with Freeze Dry/Substitute/Protect/Disable. If Glalie got the right defense boost so that whatever's in front of it can't break its sub (or has only one move to break in which case it gets disabled) the game is essentially over, Glalie will just stall forever until it gets enough SpAtk boots to sweep the game with Freeze Dry, and there's nothing in the game (except Shedinja lol) that can wall a boosted Freeze Dry especially with Disable to stop recovery.

It was banned quickly because having a strategy that was essentially "get the lucky boost when you need = win" was shit for the game.

I didn't even remember to continue my point on Melee, in that nowadays everyone across the globe has switched to playing NTSC rather than the most recent 'patch' PAL version, and all signs point to this decision having been made due to convenience (it'd be impossible to convince Americans to switch to PAL, while the other regions will play whatever they're told) rather than through any sort of discussion over which of the two is the better choice for competition.

Sure, but fans also want to insert themselves into the hierarchy or create their own hierarchies, so fan input isn't credible as it's inherently dishonest.
Smogon actually managed Gen VIII pretty well given the shitshow it was handed by Game Freak, but Gen VIII was so hated competitively it allowed an oligarchy of remaining top players to better shape the meta into something they could win at.

And that way has changed for the worse since around ten years ago. If I were to attend the local Smash weekly tomorrow (and I probably will) and ask for some items-on free-for-all matches in between or after the weekly serious business 1v1 tournament matches, I'd probably just get weird looks instead of enthusiastic participants willing to indulge in the other fun parts of the game besides that competitive setting.

Drapion is a utility pokémon foi poison teams against psychic types (and never used on dark teams). Usually (in all relevant tiers) Drapion is role-compressed (knock off, toxic spikes and general bulky offense). For monotype poison, all he does is use knock off against psychics. Since he has the other three moveslots free, one may go for Acupressure because it doesn't have high opportunity cost (unlike every other tier), and then it's evasion spam.
NU Drapion rarely uses Acu, because it prefers running either a bulky swords dance set, or a toxic spikes set, and neither can afford the moveslot. Unlike monopoison Drapion, where it's not strong enough to sweep and there are better tspikes users anyway

I'd wager some of the big spikes coincide with upcoming VGC tournaments. Showdown is still the best place to rapidly test VGC teams before moving to in-game.
