It's because for some reason colosseum and xd are getting attention again, and people are seeing how hard those games were. It wasn't just because of it all being doubles, but because of limited resources in Pokemon, good tms, and good places to level. But people take what they want from it.

All I want is a new Orre game.

To be fair, doubles allowed the AI to do a lot more unexpected strategy against you. First time I played I got walled by Dakim because I was too used to retarded enemy AI and wasn't expecting an Earthquake/Protect combo spam, or Evice's Skill Swap + Slaking combo.

Doubles is faster and more engaging than Singles.
A lot of moves that are otherwise shitmon turn wasters (looking at you, NPCs with Pokemon that know moves like Helping Hand and Follow Me) actually get use and you're expected to factor in your teambuilding, movesets, abilities and items a lot more smartly.
