These protag designs are genuinely terrible. What is going on at GAME FREAK? The 3DS games were bad, but they completely dropped the ball with the Switch.

Gens 6 - 8 designs don't look so bad when you see them as sprites, but there's just no fixing these two. They look like something from a "how to draw anime" book.

pretty sure they look so bland is because of customization, why go to all the trouble of giving them unique character designs when we will just change them.
I think theyre meant to look like this.
Its the eyes that are throwing people off, theyre not the typical anime eyes we got use to with Pokemon characters.

desu the biggest reason the designs are weird are the eyes, ken sugimori has had this consistent oval eye design for years now and they suddenly switched it up. A lot of the offputtedness of the design comes away if you fix the eyes

Never ever, because Pokemon is a game series made for children first and foremost.
Also because for adult protagonists, no one would have any reason to lie about "POKEMON FUCK. THAT'S WHERE EGGS COME FROM. THEY PUT PENIS INTO VAGINA. SEX. THAT'S HOW WE GET EGGS." and that wouldn't be brand-sanitary.
