removing hms and overworld poison were bad ideas
reusable tms have only been shit in recent games, like in gen 7 where you're handed an infinite psychic tm as part of a required story event before most pokemon can even learn it naturally. it was balanced in gen 5 because all the good tms were behind hms or postgame, but they had to buff the learnsets of a lot of pokemon to compensate and i think that's the real problem.

It was. The only bad thing about it was that Game Freak couldn’t be bothered to fix the movepools of Pokémon that needed it because they’re too busy giving Charizard a broken movepool, making the game more of an unbalanced farce than it already was.

The only one I agree with is HMs sort of, but I wish instead of outright removing them they made them more like key items that let any valid pokemon perform the action. I really don't like Ride Pokemon at all, it feels so cheap and impersonal

i honestly don't see the point of TMs being one-use until postgame, the game isn't going to provide even the tiniest challenge either way.
coverage moves are useless when "switch to mon with supereffective stab and use it" will get you through 100% of the in-game battles (even on set), and basically every pokemon learns their best stab move by level rather than TM these days.
so sure you could put EQ on all your mons, but you're still going to sweep that fire gym with your ground type (who probably didn't need the TM anyway) without even needing the others.

People keep saying this to justify every convenience, or saying they only provided artificial difficulty.
Yeah, one thing will not make the game more challenging, but when you have 50 small things easing your time, it does make the game much easier. People need to understand that each of this QoL improvement put together is what make the games ridiculous, not one specific thing.
Also the Set Battle Mode should be default so you can get free switches fighting trainers, but this you can change by yourself

the games have always been ridiculously easy.
95% of the trainers in gen 1 only have normal moves because that's all that the learnsets had back then, the game is basically over the second you grab geodude.

The Special split was a necessary change, nigger. Same with the Physical/Special attack distinction. In g1, some pokemon were completely useless because of their typing and stats. Take Gyarados, high attack, medium, unusable Special. It got lots of moves with decent coverage, even Thunder[/bolt] for some reason. But it's highest offensive stat was terrible because you had to rely on three moves that had serious consequences if you don't get good hits with them: Hyper Beam, Thrash, and Double Edge. Body Slam wasn't gonna cut it. Gyarados, in particular, benefitted greatly from having powerful physical water STAB attacks avaliable to it from g3 on. I'm sure there were many such cases, but I waited three gens to be able to actually put a Gyarados on a team and think it could be viable. G3 was a great gen for Gyarados fans in that way. Of course Dragon Dance, helped that along a bit too

They should've kept overworld poison, plus other effects (for example, paralyzed Pokemon make you walk half as fast in the overworld)
They should've combine physical and special into just Attack and Defense so you only have 4 stats

Reusable TMs are a godsend for post-game competitive battling but they suck for the singleplayer. I think SwSh splitting them into TMs and TRs was the best of both worlds.

HMs are a good concept, they gate progression like power-ups in a Metroid game. It's certainly better than just having arbitrary NPC road blocks and arranging the world to be a linear path with no interconnecting shortcuts. The only issue is that they take up move slots which limits team-building options. It's not an issue in gen 1 where there are only 3 mandatory HMs, but later gens with 3 water HMs is just excessive. Letting you use HMs without needing to waste a moveslot is the optimal solution.

Overworld poison damage should also be brought back, I agree.

Physical/special split was a good change, it means Pokemon with certain stats aren't cucked by their type being in the wrong category.

HMs are good. You're overcoming the environment with your Pokemon. Also it means you can include plenty of shortcuts into the world layout. Take Hoenn, for example. Once you get Rock Smash, you can quickly travel between Verdanturf and Rustboro. Once you get Surf, you can quickly travel between Oldale and Slateport. In later regions that have less reliance on HMs, they're just linear paths where you can only go forwards. You never have to think about where you need to go next and how to get there. The only issues with HMs is that there are too many repeated types and they take up moveslots.

And poison damage was great. Before you entered a forest, you had to prepare and stock up on antidotes. Now there's zero thought involved.

Cut is too weak, especially for mid-late game.

Strength is fine, although Rock Climb is pointless. Plus in later games, Pokemon don't have shit movepools so you don't really need to waste a move on a 80BP normal move when you could teach it a coverage or status move instead.

Rock Smash is shit.

Flash is only useful for cheese strats, although it is technically optional.

Defog is useless in single-player, although remove hazards is useful for competitive.

Honourable mention to Dig, it's not a HM but it is pretty useful in the overworld (especially since Earthquake is usually one of the last TMs you get in the game).

I'd say that Infinite TMs are great for Post-Game where you are just min-maxing mons for competitive and Facilities, but being infinite use in the main campaign definitly feels like it devalues a lot of the moves intended for low level mons since you can just skip Ember and gimmicky moves and go directly for Flamethrower.

I actually think TRs did it right, they are consumed but are piss easy to get several of/new ones off and give a additional reason to do Raids and there is nothing you only ever get once of in the game and doing Max Raids>Grinding for Pokédollars. I'd say that SwSh TMs were mostly pretty Low-End ones too, the good shit was TRs.

Same shit. I think the better option is to have a "movedex" item that records every learned move that a pokemon gains from leveling up, or from catching them. That way, you'd be more encouraged to catch and train every pokemon to get some hard to get by moves.

How this wasn't a thing yet is beyond me. Other than that, HMs shouldn't be a thing but just allow every pokemon have the capability to learn few moves depending on their body abilities. And you should be able to perform the moves without having to go through the tedious menus and waiting for the action to finish.

Worst parts of older Pokemon games, it didn't make sense when they're put inside Pokeballs which would put them in a stasis.
