Nintendo should make the next Pokemon games, not Game Freak.

Game Freak can't program to save their lives. There's a reason Iwata had to step in and rewrite the code for Gold/Silver/Crystal.

I have to give them credit where it's due. I assumed that this game would run like shit with framedrops everywhere but they managed to make it run pretty decent.

First of all, Iwata was working for HAL Laboratory, not Nintendo. Second of all, Iwata didn't rewrite the code for GSC. He created a compression tool that saved space and allowed them to include Kanto in the game.

Game Freak's problem isn't really their skill, it's their lack of ambition and the TPC's desire to shit out games every year instead of releasing polished products.

In Emerald, a location called "Navel Rock" was added to Gen 3. Split into several floors, Navel Rock is one of the biggest dungeons in the game
...if we're talking floors here
Thing is, all those maps are incredibly small for the most part, and most are completely identical
Now, Game Freak could have put these incredibly small rooms out of each others sight on one map, but they didn't do that
Navel Rock is split into several individual maps, each bearing no unique data whatsoever, and bloating the cartridge dangerously close to the map limit for no reason, while also creating like, 14 completely superfluous headers you have to wade through in the code.
